Today we visited Salsa Verde Mexican Grill in Concord, California—a hidden gem tucked away in an unassuming shopping center in the East Bay. Next to a laundromat and behind a simple facade lies what we can confidently say is the home of the best tacos outside of Mexico. Yes, the rumors are true.

Walking in, you’re greeted with all the hallmarks of an authentic taco joint: counter service, neon signs, clear plastic-covered tables, and the pièce de résistance—the big, spinning al pastor tower. English isn’t spoken here, but it doesn’t matter. Just smile, nod, and prepare for greatness.
What We Tried
Tonight, we indulged in a variety of tacos: shrimp, fish, al pastor, suadero , and chorizo. Each one was a standout, but here’s what really set them apart:

- Al Pastor: Juicy chunks of seasoned pork paired with sweet pineapple, grilled to perfection for a slightly charred flavor. The texture and taste are absolutely phenomenal.
- Chorizo: Hands down the best chorizo we’ve ever had. Spicy, garlicky, and incredibly fresh, this is a game-changer. We’ve never tasted anything quite like it.
- Shrimp Tacos: Plump, fresh shrimp with grilled vegetables and just the right amount of spice. These tacos are a perfect balance of flavor and freshness.
- The Taco Shells: The true hero of the meal. These thick, chewy, yet crispy taco shells are unlike anything you’ve ever had. They elevate every bite and are reason enough to return, even without the incredible fillings.

Every taco comes with a tangy lime and tomatillo sauce—likely with a kick of serrano pepper—and charred onions on the side. The flavors are bold, fresh, and perfectly balanced.
Drinks
We also tried the horchata, which didn’t disappoint. It had just the right amount of sweetness and spice, making it the perfect accompaniment to the meal.
Final Thoughts
Salsa Verde Mexican Grill has officially earned its spot as our favorite taco spot, including any we’ve visited in Mexico. From the atmosphere to the phenomenal food, this place is an absolute must-visit.
Rating: Resta-runt
Sure, it’s in a shopping center next to a laundromat, and there’s no table service, but who cares? When the food is this good, you embrace the no-frills charm.
Verdict: 5/5 tacos.
Not so good.
